Founder's Vision

Reviving Heritage, Inspiring the Future

In today’s world, a powerful new economy is taking shape, one fueled not just by industry or capital, but by innovation, imagination, and creativity. This rising force, known as the creative economy, is reshaping how we think about value, growth, and community. At the heart of this shift is India, a country whose soul is etched in its art and craft.

India’s Living Heritage

Across the nation, millions of artisans create timeless works of beauty from clay, fiber, leather, glass, metal, and wood — each piece a reflection of our collective past and cultural resilience. Their artistry is not merely decorative; it is a vital contributor to the economy, a symbol of identity, and a source of pride.

“Our craftspeople are not only guardians of tradition but also the architects of India’s creative future. Their skill, wisdom, and legacy must be protected and celebrated.”

Yet, despite their unmatched gifts, India’s artisans remain part of a largely unexplored financial system. Recognizing this gap, the Indian Craft Village Trust was born — a bold initiative committed to placing craft at the center of culture, economy, and sustainability.

A Vision Rooted in Experience

The Indian Craft Village Trust is a registered institution in Kolkata, founded by Mr. Rajiv Gujral, who serves as its Managing Trustee. With a celebrated career in senior leadership roles across the Tata Group, Mr. Gujral was instrumental in setting up Taj Bengal in Kolkata during the 1980s. Now, with decades of experience behind him, he returns to the city he calls home with a heartfelt mission.

“I believe art draws us together. To revive and promote the art and craft of India, and to give performing arts a dignified platform, an Art & Craft Centre was much needed. This is my offering to the city I love.”

A Collector’s Destination, A Creative Sanctuary

ICVT is envisioned as a B+G+8 storied cultural landmark covering 3.82 lakh square feet, located at Plot AF-II, Action Area-I, New Town, Kolkata. Set to commence operations in 2027, this ambitious centre is designed to be open 7 days a week, hosting high-quality exhibitions, interactive programs, talks, food courts, and wellness zones.

“We’ve positioned the Art & Craft Centre as a collector’s destination—with art, craft, culture, entertainment, health, and retail. It’s a space where minds meet, where trends are born, and where inspiration flows freely.”
Rajiv Gujral

Sustainability at the Core

ICVT is designed with green concepts and sustainable technology woven into its very fabric. From eco-friendly construction materials to the cultivation of local plants, every detail is considered.

“We are integrating sustainability into every aspect of the centre—from architecture to programming. Our goal is to create a naturally thriving environment where creativity coexists with ecology.”

Our Vision

The name INDIAN CRAFT VILLAGE TRUST is inspired by Eastern philosophy, which celebrates the co-existence of art and craft as integral to daily life. This vision acknowledges that beauty, utility, and tradition are not separate pursuits, but interwoven threads of our shared cultural identity.

ICVT stands for:

  • Reconnecting art and craft with communities.
  • Honoring local voices and regional expressions.
  • Nurturing intercultural dialogue through exhibitions, programs, and exchanges.
  • Enabling public appreciation and wide accessibility to all forms of creative expression.

Our Core Values

1. Community-Centric Engagement

ICVT aims to bring art and craft back into the daily lives of ordinary people. By offering immersive experiences and creative platforms, we ensure artisans are not just seen but celebrated.

2. Sustainable Innovation

We are committed to being a sustainable incubation force in the global ecosystem of art, design, and creativity.
Our centre will serve as a springboard for emerging talent, empowering them to contribute meaningfully to both culture and economy.

3. Creative Empowerment Through Education

From interactive programs to a dedicated art database, ICVT will offer local communities—especially young and curious minds—tools to appreciate, learn, and engage with creative practices.

4. Dynamic and Inclusive Programming

Beyond a static display, ICVT will feature:

  • Permanent collections of regional and national crafts.
  • Traveling exhibitions, pop-up showcases, and artisan residencies.
  • Live performances and demonstrations bridging traditional wisdom and modern audiences.

5. Artistic Dialogue and Global Exchange

By fostering conversations between artists, communities, and cultures, we aim to deepen understanding and celebrate diversity through creativity.

“We are not merely building a centre; we are creating a movement—an invitation for the world to see India through the lens of its most authentic storytellers: its artisans.”
Rajiv Gujral
